TOUR SUMMARY
ITINERARY
From Cairns, head west into the mountain hinterland behind the rainforest clad city into the Atherton Tablelands.
Nestled in the heart of the lush Atherton Tablelands, Lake Barrine is a serene oasis that offers an unforgettable escape into nature. Picture yourself surrounded by ancient rainforest, the gentle murmur of the water, and the beauty of crystal-clear volcanic lakes. A mug of tea with scones at the historic tea house overlooking the lake, before we venture forth.
Be led by your naturalist guide to one or several areas to witness a Wild Australian Platypus. Imagine the sheer thrill of stumbling upon a wild platypus in its natural habitat—an elusive, duck-billed, beaver-tailed creature that defies everything you thought you knew about mammals! It’s like witnessing a living, breathing enigma, as if nature itself had a playful moment of whimsy.
It’s time to indulge in a delightful lunch, and today, the choice is yours! Step back in time at the Yungaburra Hotel, where the rich history of the Tablelands comes to life through captivating memorabilia, paired with a diverse and menu. Or, for a fresh, vibrant experience, head to Mareeba and enjoy a café-style lunch at Earth Kitchen, featuring an array of wholesome, locally sourced wholefoods.
Another big mammal experience is witnessing the Mareeba Rock Wallabies at Granite Gorge. This colony is an endangered species that is unique to the region. Due to their vulnerability, they are often fed, even in the wild; as a result, they are quite reliable. The wallabies are cute, gentle, and easy to get up close to.
Just when you think the day couldn’t get any better, the afternoon offers an exciting four-wheel drive adventure through the Savannah Country, leading us to one of the most remarkable trees you’ll ever encounter.
This Strangler Fig Tree is a true natural wonder that promises to leave you in awe. Standing tall and majestic, this ancient fig tree is a marvel of both size and beauty, with sprawling roots and a dense canopy that creates a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. A living testament to nature’s resilience and grandeur.
It’s time to head back to the coast and complete our circuit of the Tablelands Region
